Items that we do not take.

When it comes to being environment friendly we take almost everything. Here is a list of some items we don’t take: food, liquids and chemicals.

Your garbage is about 60% organic waste; by composting some of these wastes it will keep all that garbage out of the landfill. Leftover food can be used as compost. Organic wastes that end up in landfills decompose without oxygen and produce methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Plants love it; compost is a nutrient-rich fertilizer that helps soil retain moisture. More compost use means less chemical fertilizers, which run off into the water table. Compost bins are cheap, many municipalities sell bins for a small fee. You can also buy them at hardware stores and plant nurseries. Or you can make your own.

There are many things we can do to improve our soil condition, and foremost of all is the addition of organic matter.

Household cleaning supplies, disinfectant sprays, detergents, soaps, shampoos; all of these cannot end up in our landfills.

Here’s another list of chemicals that we don’t take;

  • propane tanks
  • natural gases
  • nail polish remover
  • baking soda

There are certain steps we can take throughout the year to progress towards the goal of having healthy soil, and the singular act of adding organic matter where you are deficient will go a long way towards making us all better growers, with much healthier and happier plants.
